Art of Sound: Clarity Recording Project

Sound surrounds you, pulls you in, gives you a sense of space. It’s this pressure and release that pushes through the air and literally wraps around your body. It’s a very physical thing — the only part of a visual production that actually touches the audience.
Storytelling with Sound Design

Well-curated sound can tell a story all on it’s own.

Sound can convey a person’s mood by capturing breaths and sighs. Placed well, sound can make it’s audience feel textures by capturing the sounds of a hand running through grass or hearing rain land on an umbrella. They can even trigger our sense of smell by projecting sounds that remind us of preparing fresh coffee – grinding the beans, pouring a fresh cup, a metal spoon hitting the rim of a ceramic mug – you get the idea. Our latest project experiments with this in a simpler way, but with the very same intention of using the power of sound to showcase sound-based work.

As repeat clients of Clarity Recording Studio (formerly CRM Sound) we’ve spent countless hours getting to know the studio and it’s owner, Cody Anstey. I’ve filmed and photographed there before for our music documentary, Journey to Aztlán, and we’ve spent plenty of time working on musical projects with Cody. More recently, though, we had the opportunity to produce a promotional video for the studio itself – and we put a creative spin on it that we haven’t done before.

I like to connect all the dots to develop a concept that resonates most closely with the person behind the brand. In this case, working with a seasoned audio professional doesn’t only mean showing off some flashy gear – it also means dialling your attention into the finer details to give an insider’s look into a process. Planning and editing the video to revolve around sound design was easily both the most challenging and entertaining part of this project. In the video, we follow Cody as he powers up his console and outboard gear, prepares his drum kit for recording, and mixes a session.

Marco, Lunar Ring’s resident audio expert, is no stranger to audio technologies as a musician, audio engineer, sound designer and former studio owner. I’ve always focused more on visual media. I do have a keen appreciation for foley art and sound design, though – without sound, after all, only one piece of a story is being told. At Lunar Ring, we value all elements of a story – sight and sound should harmonize with one another to tell a story that piques the senses.

We’re also proud and humbled to know that our creative vision . See the testimonial below:

Angela & Marco from Lunar Ring are both highly competent in their respective fields – Angela on video production, and Marco on the audio engineering – Put them together, and you have a supergroup of sorts which will guarantee your project looks and sounds amazing! From consulting on pre-production to explaining how and why every decision was made along the way; they were a wealth of knowledge that not only demonstrates considerable experience doing this type of work, but also a genuine passion for it as well. I highly recommend Lunar Ring for anyone looking to produce professional level content for their graphic design and visual media projects. Amazing work!
