What We've Done

We’ve had the incredible opportunity to write, produce and film an independent documentary titled JOURNEY TO AZTLÁN: A Story of Cultural Identity, Music and Metal as Medium. We filmed on location at Studio Bell: home of the National Music Centre, CRM Sound Studio and other locations. Our footage follows members of Mexican diaspora in the Calgary area who reinforce their cultural ties and tell powerful stories of decolonialism and folk history through their music: Their band, CABRAKAÄN, fuses pre-hispanic and hispanic musical traditions with contemporary musical styles that include symphonic orchestral and heavy metal elements.

JOURNEY TO AZTLÁN is about finding and holding on to cultural identity through the power of metal. Follow CABRAKAÄN as they record their third album, reflect on music as an expression of their cultural identity, and show how they keep strong ties to their Mexican roots as newcomers to Canada. We’ll be releasing this in 2023, so stay tuned!

Our projects to date have been primarily documentary-style interviews, musical performances and candid behind-the-scenes footage.

About Angela

Angela is the all-things-visual expert at Lunar Ring. Her mission is to use videography, photography and design as a means to communicate complex ideas, examine social issues and help people represent their best selves.  She uses interviews as a method to curate stories from lived experience.
