It’s official: Cabrakaän have released Mictlán, the first single from their much-anticipated upcoming full-length release Aztlán. 

We’re thrilled to share with you this latest collaboration with Cabrakaän. Brace yourselves as we embark on a journey to the Aztec underworld!

Journey to the underworld: About Mictlán

Mictlán takes us on a journey to the underworld conceptualized in pre-hispanic Mexico. In Mictlán, the departed must pass 9 challenges, guided by their trusted Xolo. 

The Visuals

We wanted to show the duality of Mictlán as a concept in our visuals by contrasting dark with light. While the idea of an underworld may bring a sense of uncertainty, it’s also a rite of passage in the myth: it’s something that ultimately brings honour to the dead, and there’s a lot of beauty in that. For us, this dark manifested as Marko Cipäktli, the rough vocalist, sings lyrics in Nahuatl from the perspective of Mictlantecuhtli (the Aztec god of death) while Pat Cuikani takes on the perspective of the departed in search of their resting place.
